Pinyin character converter

Enter pinyin into the form below in the form "ni3 hao3", where the numbers 1-4 represent the Chinese tones. Once "Convert" is pressed, it will be rewritten with accented characters, making it more intuitive to read.

Detailed instructions:

You need to have a Unicode font installed to see the tone marks correctly. Enter the words in the form "hao3" where "hao" is the pinyin and "3" is the tone number. Neutral tone words/syllables don't need a tone number. Once you have clicked the "Convert" button, the words will appear with accented characters, making them easier and more intuitive to read, e.g. "hăo".

The converter follows the tone mark ordering standard as follows:

  • If the word contains an "a" or "e", they receive the tone mark
  • If the word contains "ou", the "o" receives the tone mark
  • In all other cases, the final vowel receives the mark

Separate each pinyin syllable with a space for the tone mark to be added.
