Ten to nineteen

Unlike English (10), Chinese does not have two digits to represent ten. Instead, it has a nice simple two-stroke character:

29999shí/ten/10/ shí (ten)

From ten to nineteen, simply use the shí character, followed by the unit:

30197十一shí yī/eleven/ 30045十二shí èr/12/twelve/ 30135十三shí sān/thirteen/13 / 30154十四shí sì/fourteen/14 / 30169十五shí wǔ/fifteen/ 30103十六shí liù/sixteen/16/ 30122十七shí qī/seventeen/17/ 30014十八shí bā/eighteen/18/ 30089十九shí jiǔ/nineteen/

Fourteen is a particular challenge to pronounce for English speakers - shi2 si4, somewhat reminiscent of the English "She sells sea shells" tongue twister!

Twenty to twenty-nine

Twenty is simply "two tens":

9555二十èr shí/twenty/20/ èr shí (twenty)

The units continue in the same way as 10-19:

9570二十一èr shí yī/twenty-one/ 9510èr/two/2/ 30045十二shí èr/12/twelve/ 9563二十三èr shí sān/23 / 9565二十四èr shí sì/24 / 9569二十五èr shí wǔ/twenty five/ 9510èr/two/2/ 30103十六shí liù/sixteen/16/ 9561二十七èr shí qī/twenty-seven/ 9510èr/two/2/ 30014十八shí bā/eighteen/18/ 9510èr/two/2/ 30089十九shí jiǔ/nineteen/

Thirty to ninety

All the other tens are achieved in the same way:

28586三十sān shí/thirty/30/ sān shí (thirty)
31514四十sì shí/forty/40/ sì shí (forty)
