This section introduces the Chinese number system.
Basic understanding of numbers is essential in many conversations (Including dates, times and days of the week)
Each number is shown below, in each case the hanyu-pinyin representation and English translation is also shown.
| 1 yī ![]() |
2 èr ![]() |
3 sān ![]() |
4 sì ![]() |
5 wŭ ![]() |
| 6 lìu ![]() |
7 qī ![]() |
8 bā ![]() |
9 jĭu ![]() |
10 shí ![]() |
| 0 (zero) líng ![]() |
Note! The zero character is only used when expressing the actual number “0″. It is not used as a digit expressing the number ten and above. This is shown in the table below. Also, the number one is pronounced differently is some situations. For extra clarity when reading strings of numbers (for example telephone numbers) it is said as “yao” | |||

Thanks for all the great feedback so far. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to respond individually.
A lot of the feedback shows that you want more pages of Chinese to learn - so you’ll be pleased to know I’m busy working on adding a LOT more to the site. I’m also in the process of implementing an exciting new redesign, so check back soon for updates!
